He saw an aged guy fighting to push a popsicle handcart, as Joel Cervantes Macias was driving in the Little Village area of Chicago. The guy was 89-year-old Fidencio Sanchez. He and his wife had lately lost their only daughter, and they’d been selling a type of Mexican popsicle, paletas, to pay the invoices.
“ It broke my heart seeing this man that will be enjoying retirement still working at this age,” wrote Macias. So wanting to help the old man somehow, he purchased 20 popsicles for $50. Macias and his buddy Joe Loera also began a GoFundMe effort to raise $3,000 for Fidencio and his wife. By giving over $250,000 USD in just five days!
